Upgrade from PowerPC based Mac to Intel based Mac

Summary

The Apple Mac system used PowerPC architecture in the past for a very long time. Since 2006 Apple decided to change microprocessor architecture to Intel based processors. Unfortunately this architecture change causes some incompatibilities in Kerio Connect supporting database files which need to be migrated. Kerio Connect 7.3. uses technologies which are no longer supported on PowerPC based Macs and hence it requires Intel based Mac system. Read the following article how you can upgrade your PowerPC Mac to Intel based Mac and find out what are the steps done during the upgrade procedures done by Kerio Connect 7.3..

How to move your data from one computer to another

As the first step it may be required to move old data to a new MacOS X machine. Read following article how you can backup and restore Kerio Connect data on different computer - http://kb.kerio.com/360.

Upgrade to Kerio Connect 7.3.

Kerio Connect 7.3. introduce support for the PowerPC to Intel migration of the data store. It detects old version of database files and whenever it is possible it performs its upgrade. All database files which are being upgraded / converted upon the upgrade are listed below:

  • Bayes database upgrade (AntiSpam learning mode)
  • Upgrade of supporting database file properties.fld
  • Rebuild of supporting database file search.fld

It is not possible to upgrade all database files. Those files which fails to upgrade are deleted and recreated when necessary. Read following paragraphs for more details.

Bayes database upgrade

It is not possible to upgrade Bayes database and Auto Whitelist of the SpamAssasin when changing the platform. Because of this the database and whitelist are deleted which will cause the SpamAssasin to start its learning process from beginning. This may cause poor Antispam detection rate until the Bayes database and auto whitelist is created again. The time required to rebuild the database may vary according to the number of emails your server receives daily. The Bayes database requires at least 200 spam messages and 200 ham messages. The SpamAssasin use auto learn feature, so it is not necessary to mark them manually, but the SpamAssasin will mark them automatically when the message meets criteria for auto learning.

Upgrade of properties.fld file

Some properties.fld files may be detected as corrupted (incompatible) and deleted. This may cause unexpected problems of users using Kerio Outlook Connector Offline. These incompatible files are being reported to warning.log and it is highly recommended to rebuild Kerio Outlook Connector's profile of affected users.

Rebuilding search.fld files

All search.fld files are recreated upon the upgrade. This may cause higher CPU usage of Kerio Connect server after the upgrade until all search.fld files are recreated again. The Contact and Calendar folders are recreated first. Email folders are recreated on demand when user tries to search in the folder for the first time after the upgrade. This procedure may have several side effects:

  • Search does not work for the user, until the search.fld file is created for its account and for the specific folder.
  • Contacts may temporarily disappear from ActiveSync based devices. Next synchronization will synchronize them back from server, when the folder is reindexed and search.fld file is created for the contacts folder.
  • Higher CPU usage after the upgrade, which may slightly effect the performance of the server. When all search.fld files are recreated, CPU usage should decrease to common values for the installation of your Kerio Connect server.
